The Faculty of Science and Technology at Umeå University, Sweden, is advertising up to five tenure-track positions that will give junior researchers the opportunity to develop a long-term research activity and to qualify for promotion to an Associate Professorship.
The positions are open to any applicant with a PhD in a relevant subject awarded no more than about five years ago, with exemptions made for applications with extended periods of parental leave, sick leave, etc. The Department of Mathematics and Mathematical Statistics welcome applicants from any field within mathematics and statistics. We currently conduct research in computational mathematics, discrete mathematics, mathematical modelling (primarily in biology, evolution of cooperation, ecology, and finance), analysis (real and complex, including PDEs), and mathematical statistics including data science.
Umeå offers excellent working and living conditions. The successful applicant would typically have to teach 1-2 courses per year and supervise 1-2 masters theses per year. The remaining time can be used freely for independent research. The position comes with discretionary funds that can be used for travel, inviting guest researchers, etc. An applicant appointed at the Department of Mathematics and Mathematical Statistics will also be given resources to appoint a PhD student. The working environment is international and very family friendly, as exemplified by a generous allotment of 480 days paid parental leave for each child. Umeå is a young city located right next to a large river. It is surrounded by forests and lakes and lies close by the sea. The city offers excellent opportunities for both outdoor and indoor activities.
